Nu Metro Cinema Canal Walk Here is an extract from the article I wrote and which was published in The Argus newspaper on 15 January 2002 under the letters section:
We went to see Lord of the Rings on 28th December at 20:30 at
Canal Walk. We bought two tickets at the counter at 19:45 and were told
that only the front row was available or else 5 seats in the Cinema Prive rows
at R35 each as the cinema was full. We had to take the expensive seats in the
end as we really wanted to see the movie and had arranged a baby sitter for
the evening. To my amazement the cinema was only half full with some
rows being completely empty.
When I queried this afterwards with their management I was told
that rows were reserved for Computicket bookings and therefore appeared as
booked on the Nu-Metro system and they admitted they were losing money as many
patrons just turned away thinking the show was sold out. Nu-Metro needs to
look at releasing the blocks on the Computicket bookings earlier before shows,
and also to advise patrons to at least wait until the blocks are lifted before
declaring the theatre full and steering patrons towards the expensive seats.
Alternatively they should move over to a realtime system so that they and
Computicket can book together.
The moral of the story is to rather wait until just before the
show starts before believing the theatre to be full. At least my paying
R70 for two tickets made up for some of Nu-Metro's lost bookings that evening!
